“I have to be honest and admit that I came to Mary Jo Sharp’s Defending the Faith: Apologetics in Women’s Ministry predisposed
to disagree with it. For good or for ill, I have some foundational and
philosophical disagreements with the assumption that there must be
separate ministries for men and women other than for certain delicate
gender-specific issues. I have found no place in the New Testament that
implies that men and women should be discipled differently or that they
have different needs when it comes to spiritual formation or studying
the Bible.
In addition, my personality is such that I have never found any of
the traditional activities associated with women’s ministry remotely
interesting (although I’m not criticizing women who do) and I am deeply
offended when publishers assume that all they need to do is slap some
flowers on the front of a Bible to make it more appealing to female
buyers.

years ago by a women’s ministry meeting at my church where they made us
get up and “do the Locomotion” in order to force us to talk to perfect

Why is apologetics so important and needed in women’s ministries at
this time? Women need to be honest with themselves about why they
believe in God. Honesty about their beliefs (and doubts) helps women
live transformed lives that affect other people. It also helps them
answer questions people may have about belief in God without feeling

this by creating safe environments that allow for the exploration of
questions about faith in women’s ministries.

Christianity Apologetics Ministry, Mary Jo Sharp is passionate about
enlisting more women in defending the faith. In this interview, she
describes how she’s finding a very receptive audience as she speaks at
women’s ministries around the country:
• Why has there traditionally been a shortage of women in the field of apologetics?
I don’t have any statistical research on why women are not as
publicly involved with apologetics. However, from my interaction with
women at conferences, I have found a few repeating thoughts on the
issue:
1) They’ve never been introduced to the field of apologetics before
and/or they are not sure of its relevance to their life. Women in the
church need to understand the importance of apologetics and its
potential impact. I’ve found that once women’s groups are aptly
introduced to the subject, they have some of the most impassioned
responses to the material. It’s not so much of a lack of desire as a

Mary Jo Sharp is a former atheist from the
Pacific Northwest who thought religion was for the weak-minded. She now
holds a Masters in Christian Apologetics from Biola University and is
the first woman to become a Certified Apologetics Instructor through the
North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. A
clear communicator with a teacher’s heart, she finds great joy in
discussing the deep truths of her Lord and Savior. She administrates the
